About CognitiveDrill
A library of browser-based cognitive tests, built around one idea. The number is the point, and the number should be honest.
The idea
Cognitive tests online come in two kinds. There are toys, which are fun and meaningless. And there are medical-sounding assessments, which are neither medical nor assessments. Those are the reason a brain-training company paid a two million dollar settlement to the Federal Trade Commission in 2016.
This site is a third thing. It treats your mind the way a running app treats running. You do not go out to improve your heart health. You go out to beat last Tuesday.
So every test here gives you a lap time. One number, measured properly, worth comparing against your own earlier numbers, and honest about what it does not mean.
Editorial standard
Every test page names where the task came from, with a real citation. Each one also names at least one way our version differs from the published original. Where our settings depart from the standard procedure, the page says so and says why. Where a number is quoted, its source is named.
We do not bolt the same set of sections onto every page with the nouns swapped. If two pages could share a structure, at least one of them has nothing of its own to say and should not exist.
The full measurement standard is on the methodology page, including the timing method, the anticipation filter and the display latency we cannot correct for.
What is not finished
This section exists because a site that only lists its strengths is not being straight with you.
No outside expert reviews these pages yet. Everything is written and fact-checked in house. Pages carry no expert byline because there is no expert to name. Hiring a psychology or neuropsychology reviewer is the next thing on the list.
We have published no figures of our own. Every percentile bar on the site currently comes from a reference distribution based on published research, and it is labelled as such wherever it appears. A group needs at least 1,000 results before its numbers go up here.
Four of the ten planned domains are live. The other six have no pages. A hub with two tests in it is not a hub, it is a placeholder.
How it is paid for
Nothing yet. There are no adverts on the site as it stands. When traffic justifies them, adverts will run below the result block. Never above a test, and never inside one.
Their space will always be reserved in advance, so an arriving advert cannot shove the page under your finger. None will cover the screen. And no test will ever go behind a login or a paywall.
