About this test

What this measures, stated plainly

Clicks per second measures how fast you can repeat one small finger movement. It is not a thinking test. There is no serious published data to compare it against, and no research depends on it. It is here because a great many people want it, and because most versions of it are broken.

Being honest about that costs nothing. A ten-second click test is a lap time in the purest sense. It is yours, it goes up when you practise, and it means nothing beyond itself.

The three things most click tests get wrong

First, the timer. Many tests start counting when the page loads, or when you press a separate start button. Your reaction to that button then leaks into the score. Here the clock starts on your first click. That is the only start point that measures clicking rather than reacting.

Second, what counts as a click. Some versions count the press and the release as two separate events, which roughly doubles the rate they report. This test counts each click once.

Third, filtering. Two clicks less than 15 ms apart are set aside rather than counted, because no human finger moves that fast. That catches most auto-clicker software, and mouse switches that fire twice on one press. The limit is deliberately loose. Fast human clicking almost never drops below 60 ms between clicks, so it never gets filtered.

Technique, hardware and the honest limits

A normal one-finger rate sits around 6 to 7 clicks per second over ten seconds. Two techniques beat it. Jitter clicking tenses the forearm to produce a tremor. Butterfly clicking alternates two fingers on one button. Both score higher. Both are hard on your tendons and your mouse.

Hardware matters too. Light switches with a short press are measurably faster than heavy stiff ones. Some mice also ignore a second click arriving too soon after the first, which quietly eats your quickest ones. We correct for none of this, because there is no defensible way to.

A short word about your hands

This is the one test on the site with a real physical risk attached. Fast, tiny clicking with a tense forearm is a known route to tendon pain. The ache usually turns up a day or two later rather than during the run.

Ten seconds is harmless. An hour of ten-second bursts chasing a number is not. If your hand, wrist or forearm aches, stop and do something else. The typing speed test measures a far more useful skill, and average typing speed puts real numbers on where you sit.

One comparison is worth making. Your click rate is limited by muscle. Your reaction time is limited by something else entirely. What counts as a good reaction time explains why your equipment matters more to that number than to this one.

What is a good CPS score?

Around 6.5 clicks per second over ten seconds is typical. Above 8 is fast for normal single-finger clicking, and the very high scores posted online generally use jitter or butterfly techniques.

Why is my score lower here than on other click test sites?

Three reasons. The timer starts on your first click rather than earlier. Each click is counted once rather than twice. And gaps under 15 ms are filtered out.

Does the test detect auto-clickers?

It filters inputs arriving faster than a human finger can produce and reports how many it removed. It is not a serious anti-cheat system and there is no leaderboard to cheat on.

Which test length should I use?

Ten seconds. One second is dominated by how you happen to start, and sixty seconds mostly measures endurance and forearm fatigue.

Is jitter clicking safe?

It puts sustained tension through the forearm to produce a tremor, and people who do it a lot report pain. We do not recommend it and we will not be publishing a guide to it.
