What Is a Good Digit Span?

Percentiles for forward and backward span, and what a high score actually means.

Short answer: seven forward is unremarkable, eight is good, and nine or more is genuinely high. Five or below in a quiet room with full attention is worth noticing, but on its own it is not a sign of anything. Backward spans run one to two digits shorter than forward spans in the same person.

The longer answer is the reason this page exists. A span measures your technique as much as your capacity. The number people quote from Miller's 1956 paper does not mean what they think it means. The table below is a reference distribution rather than CognitiveDrill data, and the section under it explains exactly how it was built.

Method, and what n is

The percentiles above are a reference distribution shaped to match published adult span data, not measurements taken from this site. CognitiveDrill's published sample size for digit span is zero. No norm goes on a page until a cell holds at least 1,000 anonymous results. When that happens, this table gets replaced and dated.

Speed is part of the definition. These figures assume one digit per second, the standard clinical rate. Show the digits faster and spans drop by about half a digit. Show them slower and spans rise. A span quoted without a rate is not a span. It is just a number.

The magical number seven is about chunks, not digits

Miller's paper is titled 'The magical number seven, plus or minus two'. It is the most cited and least read result in the field.

His argument was about how many chunks fit in immediate memory. He said plainly that what counts as a chunk depends on what the listener already knows. The string 'B B C I T V' is six letters, or two chunks, depending on where you live.

Cowan revisited this in 2001. Block rehearsing and grouping in the laboratory and raw capacity comes out closer to four. Both figures are right about different things. Four is what you hold with no help. Seven is what you hold with the help any literate adult applies without noticing.

Why forward and backward spans differ

Repeating a list forward can come straight out of the loop you use to say things to yourself. Reversing it means holding the list and working on it at the same time. That is a heavier job, and it costs one to two digits every time.

Clinical test sets score the two separately for exactly this reason. A large gap between them is treated as more telling than either number alone. You can produce both on the digit span test by switching recall order in the settings.

High spans are usually a technique

The best-documented case is a student who trained on digit span for over 200 hours. He reached a span in the high seventies. He did it by turning groups of digits into running times, a subject he knew inside out. His memory for letters did not change at all.

That is the clearest proof available that a span is not a fixed capacity. It is capacity plus whatever tricks you can bring to it.

In practice, most people scoring nine or above are grouping digits into pairs or triples, often to a rhythm. This is not cheating. It is worth knowing about yourself, because it means a rising span shows a better technique rather than more room. How working memory works covers the machinery behind that difference.

When a low span matters

A single low score in a browser, at the end of a long day, with a phone buzzing, means very little. Span moves with attention, noise, stress and how new the format feels. First attempts routinely land a point below where the same person settles.

Span is used clinically, but always within a full assessment by someone who can see the rest of your history. If your memory has changed in a way that concerns you or the people around you, that is a conversation for a doctor. Nothing on this page can answer it, and a website that implies otherwise is selling something.

Is a digit span of 5 bad?

Not on its own. It sits near the tenth percentile of the reference distribution. Attention, tiredness, noise and an unfamiliar format all move a span by a digit or more.

Can digit span be trained?

Yes, substantially, by learning to chunk. The gains are specific to the material you trained on and do not transfer to memory in general.

Does a high digit span mean high IQ?

It correlates modestly with measures of general ability in large samples, which tells you nothing reliable about an individual. It is a component of some IQ batteries, not a substitute for one.
