Why there is no comparison

Every other test here draws your score on a bar of published results. This one cannot. Nobody has timed enough people on this task to say what a typical time is, so a bar here would be a picture of a number we made up.

The times quoted elsewhere for this task disagree with each other by a factor of five, and none of them name a study. We would rather show you nothing than show you one of those.

What the interval actually tells you

A double-click is two presses arriving close together in time. The time between them is the double-click interval. This test measures that gap in milliseconds, across ten repeated pairs.

The interval is not a measure of speed in the same sense as clicks per second. It is a single gesture: how quickly can you release and press again. The click speed test measures how many clicks you produce over ten seconds. That is a rate. This is a timing. The two are related but they are not the same number.

Most people land somewhere between 80 and 250 ms on a first run. That range is wide because it includes everything from technique to hardware to how relaxed your hand is. Nobody has published a behavioural distribution for this task, which is why the page shows your number without placing it against a population. The section below explains what the operating system does with a number like yours.

The 500-millisecond threshold

Your operating system has a double-click threshold. Any two clicks arriving within that window are treated as a double-click and open a file, select a word or activate a control. Clicks further apart than the threshold are two separate single clicks.

The default on Windows is 500 ms. On macOS it is also around 500 ms, adjustable in System Settings under Accessibility. On Linux the default varies by desktop environment.

If your median interval lands well below the system threshold, the system will always recognise your double-clicks. If it lands above, you are likely seeing failed double-clicks in daily use. Raising the threshold in your system settings is the fix, not changing how you click.

The threshold exists because of motor control, not software. Many people cannot reliably produce an interval below 200 ms without practising the gesture. The default 500 ms covers most users. It does not cover people with certain motor conditions, which is why the accessibility threshold is adjustable.

When the mouse is the problem, not you

Mouse switches fail in a particular way. As the metal contacts inside age, they begin to bounce: one press registers as two or three separate signals. The effect shows up as accidental double-clicks on what you intended as a single press.

This test measures the opposite case, which is also real. Some switches develop a secondary bounce that eats a click rather than adding one. You press twice and the mouse reports one. Your score rises not because you slowed down, but because the switch dropped a press.

The filtered count at the bottom of your result card shows two kinds of discarded input. The first kind arrived less than 15 ms after the previous press, which is the threshold for electrical contact bounce. The second kind arrived more than 800 ms later, too slow to be a deliberate pair. A high filtered count often points to a switch that is chattering rather than anything you did.

A score that varies wildly across runs, or a filtered count that climbs, is worth taking seriously. Average typing speed can help separate equipment problems from technique. Typing speed is affected by key travel and actuation force in ways that double-clicking is not.

Reading the extras

The fastest and slowest intervals in your result show the spread of your run. A narrow spread means you are consistent. A wide spread means something changed across the ten trials. Common causes are a tiring hand, a tense forearm, or a switch that behaves differently under fast presses.

Your fastest interval is also the one the system is most likely to miss. If your mouse has an anti-chatter delay set too aggressively, your quickest presses are the first ones to get eaten. What counts as a good reaction time explains how hardware delays compound. The same logic applies here. Your input has to survive the switch, the USB polling cycle and the driver before it reaches the operating system.

The score on its own is a measurement, not a rating. It tells you what you produced today with your current hardware and your current level of tiredness. It does not tell you what you are capable of, and it says nothing about anything other than this gesture.

Questions

What is a normal double-click speed?

Nobody has published a distribution for this task, so the honest answer is that no normal is known. Most people produce intervals between 80 and 250 ms in informal testing. If your score sits in that range, your mouse will almost certainly recognise your double-clicks under the default system threshold of 500 ms.

Why does the page say there is no comparison?

No peer-reviewed study has measured double-click intervals across a large adult sample. Without a real distribution, the only honest thing to show is your number. Placing it against a made-up bar would give a confident-looking answer to a question nobody has actually studied.

What does a high filtered count mean?

Two kinds of input are filtered. Presses that arrive less than 15 ms apart are electrical contact bounce from the switch, not a second finger tap. Presses that arrive more than 800 ms apart are too slow to be a deliberate pair. A high count often means your mouse switch is beginning to fail, not that your technique is wrong.

Can I improve my double-click speed?

Yes, within limits set by your hardware. Lighter switches with shorter travel require less force to actuate and reset, which shortens the interval a little. Technique helps too: keeping your finger close to the button and relaxing the forearm between presses reduces both the interval and its variation. Beyond a certain point the bottleneck is the switch rebound time, and no technique overcomes that.

How is this different from the click speed test?

The click speed test measures how many clicks you can produce in ten seconds. That is a rate: clicks per second. This test measures the gap inside a single double-click gesture. A fast clicker who pauses between double-click pairs can still have a slow interval. The two tests are measuring different things about your hand.

Does my mouse polling rate affect the result?

At standard polling rates (125 Hz, 8 ms between reports) the resolution is too coarse to matter for most results in this range. At 1000 Hz polling (1 ms resolution) the measurement is precise enough that the switch itself is the limiting factor. If you are chasing a consistent low number, polling rate matters less than switch quality.
