Why these roles exist

CognitiveDrill publishes one number per test, and names where that number came from. That only holds if somebody checks. Most of the work here is checking.

So these are not growth roles. Nobody is asked to hit a traffic target. The job is to read a page, take a test, open a paper, and say plainly what is wrong. The methodology page is the standard all of it is measured against.

Every role is remote, paid, and scoped as contract work. You get a brief, a rate and a deadline before you start. There are no unpaid trial tasks.

How we work

You read every page before it ships and catch what a script cannot. Sense first, then spelling and house style.

What you would do

  • Read each new page end to end, in the order a visitor reads it.
  • Flag any sentence that needs a second reading to make sense.
  • Hold the house style: British spelling, short sentences, no jargon without a plain-English handle.
  • Check that each Quick start step tells someone what to do and nothing else.
  • Return every change as a list, with the reason beside it, so a fix lands once.

What we are looking for

  • You have proofread copy for a living, or close to it.
  • You are comfortable saying a sentence is bad, and saying why.
  • You read English as a first language or near enough.
  • You can turn a page around inside two working days.

USD 40,000 to 50,000 a year, full time. Pro rata for the hours agreed.

Data validator

You check the figures the site publishes against the source they came from. A wrong median is worse than a crash, because a crash is visible.

What you would do

  • Take a test yourself and compare the score on screen against what the run should have produced.
  • Recompute a published percentile by hand and say whether it matches the page.
  • Check every table on a statistics page against the study it cites.
  • Report any figure that cannot be traced back to a named source.
  • Write each finding as a number, a source and a difference, never as an opinion.

What we are looking for

  • You are fluent with medians, percentiles and sample sizes.
  • A spreadsheet does not scare you, and neither does a research paper.
  • You would rather raise a small error than let it through.
  • You can explain a discrepancy to somebody who did not find it.

You run every test on real hardware and say where it feels wrong. Old phones and slow connections are the point, not an edge case.

What you would do

  • Run each new test on your own phone, tablet and laptop.
  • Time how long a page takes to become usable on a slow connection.
  • Try to break a test: tap early, tap twice, rotate the phone mid-run.
  • Say plainly where the instructions failed you the first time you read them.
  • Record the device, the browser and the steps, so a fault can be reproduced.

What we are looking for

  • You own more than one device, and at least one of them is old.
  • You can describe a fault in the order it actually happened.
  • You have tested software, games or hardware before, paid or unpaid.
  • You notice when something feels slow before a stopwatch tells you.

Citation checker

You open the primary source and check that it says what we say it says. No citation on this site is marked verified until a person has read it.

What you would do

  • Find the primary source behind a citation, rather than a summary of it.
  • Check the quoted figure, the sample and the year against the paper itself.
  • Mark a source verified only once you have read the relevant section.
  • Say when a paper does not support the claim that was hung on it.
  • Keep each note short: the page, the figure, and what it actually says.

What we are looking for

  • You can read a psychology paper and find the method section.
  • You have journal access, or you know how to get hold of a paper.
  • You will say no to a citation that nearly fits.
  • You are precise about what a study measured and who it measured.

Expert reviewer, psychology

You are a credentialed psychologist or neuropsychologist. You review the test pages, and your name and credential go on the ones you sign off.

What you would do

  • Review each test page against the published task it is built from.
  • Check that the page states what the score does not mean.
  • Approve or reject the claims wording before a page ships.
  • Let us publish your name and credential on the pages you review.

What we are looking for

  • You hold a relevant postgraduate qualification and can evidence it.
  • You have worked with cognitive testing in research or in clinic.
  • You are willing to be named, because a byline is a claim about a real person.
  • You are comfortable rejecting a page that overstates its number.

USD 40,000 to 50,000 a year, full time. Pro rata for the hours agreed.

How hiring works

  1. Write to us with the role in the subject line. A few paragraphs is plenty.
  2. Tell us about one thing you found wrong in someone else's work, and what you did about it.
  3. We reply inside five working days, either way.
  4. A paid first task follows, scoped to a few hours, at the agreed rate.
  5. If it works for both of us, the work becomes a standing contract.

What we pay

Every role above sits on one band: 40,000 to 50,000 US dollars a year for a full-time load. None of these roles is full time. Each one runs at a few hours a week, so what you are actually paid is that band pro rata for the hours you agree.

The figure is settled in writing before you start, and the first task is paid at it. We print the band rather than hiding it, for the same reason the site prints where its numbers came from. Two true numbers arranged to mislead are worth no more than one invented one.

That rule runs the rest of the site too, which is why the about page lists what is still missing rather than hiding it.

Questions

Are these jobs or freelance contracts?

Contracts. Each role has an agreed rate, an agreed scope and a deadline. There is no salary, no notice period and no exclusivity.

Where do you hire from?

The United Kingdom and India, because those are the two places we can pay and coordinate properly. Everything is remote and asynchronous.

What do these roles pay?

The band is 40,000 to 50,000 US dollars a year for a full-time load. Every role here runs at a few hours a week, so what you are paid is that band pro rata. The figure is agreed in writing before you start.

Is there an unpaid trial task?

No. The first task is paid at the agreed rate, whether or not it turns into a standing contract.

Can I apply for more than one role?

Yes. Name both in the subject line and tell us which one you would rather do.

How long does a reply take?

Five working days at most. If you have heard nothing by then, write again and we will chase it.
