About this test

The auto-repeat problem

Hold a key down and your computer starts pretending you are pressing it again and again. It waits about half a second, then fires 20 to 30 times a second. A test that counts all of those will happily report 28 taps per second from someone resting a thumb on the bar.

Browsers label those fake presses, so they are easy to spot. This test throws every one of them away, and tells you how many it threw away.

It also drops any two real presses arriving less than 25 milliseconds apart. That is faster than a finger can travel, and it usually means a macro or a failing key.

Why keyboard tapping beats mouse clicking, usually

Most people tap slightly faster on the space bar than on a mouse button. There are two reasons. You can hit a space bar with either thumb, or alternate between them, which halves the work each one does. And most keys need a shorter press than a mouse button does under a fixed grip.

Comparing this against the click speed test on yourself is worth doing, because the gap is mostly about your equipment rather than about you. Flat keyboards with a 2 mm press beat deep mechanical ones at this silly task. Stiff membrane keyboards lose badly.

What your keyboard hardware does to the number

Cheap keyboards cannot report every combination of keys held at once. The effect is called ghosting, and the keyboard handles it by refusing the extra presses. That rarely bites on a one-key test. It is why a keyboard's advertised rollover matters in games and does not matter here.

What can bite is the anti-bounce delay. A mechanical switch chatters electrically as it closes, so the keyboard ignores anything further for a few milliseconds. Set that delay too long and your fastest taps disappear.

So if your filtered count is high while you are tapping normally, your keyboard is doing that to you. The test is not being unfair.

Reading the number, and a warning

Around 6.4 taps per second over ten seconds is typical. Above 8 is fast for a single thumb, and alternating thumbs beats that comfortably.

As with everything in this hub, the score is a lap time and nothing more. It tracks no mental ability and predicts nothing outside itself. Average typing speed covers the keyboard skill that actually matters. What counts as a good reaction time explains why fast fingers and fast reactions are separate things.

The same caution applies here as to click speed. Fast tapping with a tense forearm is a known way to end up with sore tendons, and the soreness usually turns up a day later. A few ten-second runs are fine. An hour of them is not.

Why does holding the space bar not increase my score?

Because those events come from your operating system's key auto-repeat, not from your hand. They are flagged as repeats by the browser, ignored, and counted in the filtered total.

Why is my keyboard slower than my mouse?

Usually key travel and actuation force, and occasionally switch debounce set high in the firmware. A high filtered count while tapping normally points at debounce.

Does this test anything about my brain?

No. It measures how quickly a finger can strike a key. It is included because people look for it, and because most implementations of it count auto-repeat events and hand out impossible scores.

Which test length should I use?

Ten seconds. Five is dominated by how you happen to start and sixty mostly measures how long your forearm lasts.
